[00] studio

From zero, to form.

Zeroform is a small software studio. Every product we make starts as a single point, one thing it has to do well, and we keep working it until it has its form: finished, fitted, nothing left wobbling. So far: DIGU, the Maldivian card game, and The Traveller, a survival and sailing game across the real Maldives.

[01] how we work

Point, line, plane, form.

In geometry a point has no size at all. Move it and you get a line; move the line, a plane; move the plane, a solid. That's also how we build, one dimension at a time.

  1. 00 point

An idea with nothing around it.

Every product starts as one point: the one thing it has to do well. For DIGU that was simple to say and hard to do: play Digu with your friends, properly, by the real rules.

  2. 01 line

    A plan you can follow.

From the point, one line. The rules written down before the first screen, what gets built first and what waits. If we can't draw the line, we don't start.

  3. 02 plane

    Something you can try.

Then it gets width: a version real people can play, early and rough. We watch, measure and change it, again and again, until the shape stops moving.

  4. 03 form

    Finished means finished.

Last, the slow part that makes it solid: edge cases, load tests, accessibility, the hundredth review. It ships when there's nothing left to fix, not when the calendar says so.

DIGU

Digu is the rummy the Maldives grew up on. Draw, build your sets and runs, and declare DIGU when your ten cards fall into three, three and four. Play with friends at a private table, join a club, climb the season's rankings and take a seat in the nightly tournaments.

The Traveller

Fish, forage, trade and sail your way across the real Maldives, all 1,190 islands of them. Land in Malé as a backpacker, wash up on an empty islet as a castaway, or grow up on a local island with a dugout and a handline. Then work your way up from a coconut-log raft to a dhoni of your own.

[03] the name

A matte black ring shaped like the digit zero, standing on bone paper in soft daylight.
fig. 1 · the zero, as an object

Zero, then form.

  • point
  • line
  • plane
  • form

The name is the whole idea: start from zero and don't stop until the thing has its form. Not "good enough for now". Perfect, or as close as we can get it.

In the logo, the o of zero is a real zero, drawn as one closed line around its origin point. That point, the small vermilion one, is where everything here starts. You'll find it on every page.

A drafting table: a compass, a mechanical pencil and a construction drawing of a zero with a small orange point at its centre.
fig. 2 · measured

Measured first.

We write the rules, the numbers and the edge cases down before we build. DIGU started as a written rulebook, not a screen.

Hands turning a pale wooden ring on a lathe, with curled shavings, in a dark workshop.
fig. 3 · made by hand

Made by hand.

No templates and no shortcuts we'd be embarrassed by. Every screen, rule and sentence is checked against how it should feel to the person using it.

A grid of small light points on black that join into lines and close into a ring, with one orange point.
fig. 4 · finished

Closed, not open.

A zero is a line that meets itself. We close our loops too: bugs fixed, questions answered, promises kept.
